Television journalists come in two varieties: the old school types are interested in insightful reporting while the new wave focuses more on developing their individual personas than informing the people. This is a complaint I heard again and again in doing research for Snow Days. News anchors and meteorologists alike spoke of this issue, as did one of their cameramen.
This dichotomy is not exclusive to television news. Every kind of media-making community suffers from it. Among my own, I see some artists obsess about content and forget to make their delivery intriguing. This lopsided approach means that no one ever gets to their genius idea because the manner in which they present it is so poor. Other artists are so keen on delivery that they don't manage to say anything with their work, resulting in an object that I would call craft rather than art.
The best, as always, is moderation. Content and delivery in perfect harmony: a most noble goal in any medium!
