Christine Hoekenga portrait

In 2005, I really embraced the "landscape orientation" of a composition--horizontal instead of vertical. I began to enjoy the background breathing space that this orientation allowed.
I created a whole series in this manner, Private Masks, and it was a participant in that series who commented about this shift in my work. Steve Mattsson said that my works were remarkably abstract for being so representational! He was referring to my compositions as well as my use of color and texture. He saw that, at my core, I love the look of paint on canvas. If I manipulate the paint to look like a portrait, it's in part because I don't know how to make a composition without a face in it!
