Je m’appelle Gwenn Liberty Seemel. Mon père voulait me donner le prénom de la cloche de l’indépendance à Philadelphie—Liberty Bell Seemel—mais il a accepté un compromis quand ma mère a observé que cette célèbre «ding-dong» est non seulement une cloche mais elle est fêlée aussi.

J’ai été élevée à San Francisco en Californie ainsi que dans un petit village en France. En Bretagne, j’ai assisté à la même école primaire que ma mère quand elle était petite. Il y a vingt ans, ma famille s’est installée en Oregon aux États-Unis. J’habite à Portland avec mon ami, et je suis peintre.

Mes portraits suivent deux voies: le portrait individuel et le portrait dans une série. Je peins des portraits sur commande et je peins aussi des portraits de plusieurs personnes dans le but d’explorer un sujet particulier. Ce sont ces collections conceptuelles que j’expose. En 2010 et 2011, par exemple, une de ces séries, Subjective, était en tournée dans le nord-ouest des États-Unis. Subjective est née d’une collaboration avec Becca Bernstein, et Richard Brillant a écrit l’introduction du catalogue de l’exposition.

Mon project actuel, Le crime contre nature, est une collection de tableaux et un livre pour l’enfant en chacun d’entre nous. Il explore toutes les façons dont les femmes et les hommes pensent qu’ils doivent se comporter pour être naturelle, et le livre comprend un avant-propos par le biologiste de l’évolution Joan Roughgarden.

Cette vidéo est une bonne exemple de ce que je publie sur mon blog. Je fais des vidéoblogs et j’écris en français ainsi qu’en anglais sur comment je crée mes œuvres, comment vivre de son art, comment le droit d’auteur est dangereux pour la créativité, et les difficultés de vivre avec l’endométriose.
