Art and money

A conversation with Gabe Flores about art and money.
Commission work ≠ commercial work

In this vlog, I talk about a few things that are important for artists to keep in mind when they’re doing commission work.
Selling art

Asking for the sale is a sure way to lose it. As long as people know what you do, they’re potential clients, but, if you get pushy about it, you’ll only seem too desperate to be worth the investment.
How to get publicity as an artist

Over the years, I’ve discovered that arts writers are people too and that it’s best to treat them that way.
How jealousy can be useful

Envy has a bad reputation, but this particular deadly sin can be positively fruitful for an artist’s career if handled properly.
Richard Brilliant wrote about my work…

...and I didn’t even have to die first.
The expert versus the model

We live in an “expert culture,” surrounded by artist coaches who have to tell us what to do because they can’t show us how to do it.
Making a living is like making a painting

I like to think of marketing as a creative act, much like making a painting. Reframing it in this way has helped me to embrace the business side of art.
On blogging and being a better artist

Today is the second birthday of my blog, and, in the last two years, my forum has done me more good than I could have imagined.
The artist’s self-esteem

Balancing self-criticism and self-belief is a challenge every artist faces.
I ♥ Becca Bernstein!

When I met Becca years ago, I never imagined we would team up. Now that we are in the midst of touring our collaborative series, I am so glad we did!
Gratitude

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Artists’ Fellowship Inc and Change Inc helping me out with recent medical expenses. On Monday, the Haven Foundation awarded me a generous grant that completely pays off my bills.

My name is Gwenn Seemel. I live in Portland, Oregon, USA. I’m a working artist and I’ve sold my soul to the genre of portraiture. I blog in French sometimes, but mostly it’s in English. More...
