On saying no and saying anything at all

A few years ago, back when I was still living with my brother, our house was attacked. The culprit was some kid with a stencil and some spray paint, and I’m glad to say his assault didn’t go unanswered.
Baby-raising and the feminine condition

Not much has changed since women were legally considered the property of men, but I have a healthy notion as to how we might change that.
The home studio / L’atelier à la maison

I love working from home, even if it means that the work I do is viewed as work that’s done in the home. J’aime travailler à la maison, même si cela veut dire que le travail que je fais est considéré comme du travail qui est fait à la maison.
Animal crackers / Des biscuits en forme d’animaux

On a recent research trip to the zoo I learned more about people than I did about animals. Il y a quelques semaines, j’ai été au zoo pour faire des recherches pour ma nouvelle série, et là j’ai appris plus sur les hommes que sur les animaux.
Institutional backing and artistic vision

It was an unfortunate series of events in my high school theater program that inadvertently taught me that art and institutions don’t really mix, and I’ve been a freelancer ever since.
On hating the straight white male

Oppressing someone because he is a straight white male is the same as oppressing someone because she-he is not. Believing that someone is less deserving of respect because of his sexual orientation, ethnicity, and sex is always wrong no matter the sexual orientation, ethnicity, and sex of the parties involved in the exchange.
Feminine

What does that word even mean?
A woman’s freedom

Yesterday I attended a screening of A Woman Like That, a movie about the life and work of the 17th century painter Artemisia Gentileschi interwoven with that of the filmmaker Ellen Weissbrod.
Putting my face on

If I’m a feminist, it’s because I don’t wear make-up; if I don’t wear make-up, it’s because I have big feet. My shoe size made all the difference for me.
Beauty / La beauté

If I don’t believe in flattering my subjects, it’s because I don’t believe that today’s ideals of beauty are beautiful. Si je ne flatte pas mes modèles, c’est parce que je trouve que les idéaux de beauté dans la vie contemporaine ne sont pas beaux.
“Variability is the enemy of quality.”

Last month I visited a working factory and learned something about where gender equality stands today.
The feminist art / L’art féministe

Portraiture has long been considered a female art, but it is also a fundamentally feminist art. Le portrait est peut-être un art féminin, mais il est aussi un art féministe.
