A bunny for the new year / Un lapin pour la nouvelle année
What says “best wishes for the new year” like a bunny in a teacup?
Y a-t-il quelque chose de mieux pour dire “meilleurs vœux pour la nouvelle année” qu’un lapin dans une tasse?
I don’t send out holiday cards: I send out New Year’s cards. It’s a Fench tradition to do so, and it’s one of those things that makes me more French than American.
That said, a bunny in a teacup isn’t exactly French iconography for New Year’s wishes. For that, I was inspired by the Internet meme of videos of bunnies in cups, or, more specifically, by the reaction that a dear friend had to those videos. He said they made him feel peaceful. Since that’s exactly the the sort of spirit that I like to convey around this time of year, I figured that a baby rabbit in a mug was as good as a snowflake!
Aux États-Unis, on envoie des cartes de «fêtes» vers la fin de l’année. Je n’ai jamais aimé cette tradition parce qu’il me semble que ça donne trop d’importance à Noël—une fête qui, en dépit de ce que certains aimeraient croire, n’est pas célébrer par tout le monde! Moi, j’envoie des cartes pour la nouvelle année: je suis plutôt française de cette manière.
Un lapin dans une tasse ne vient pas de l’iconographie américaine pour la nouvelle année. Pour cela, j’ai été inspirée par le phénomène Internet des vidéos de lapins dans des tasses, ou, plus précisément, par la réaction qu’un ami très cher a eu à ces vidéos. Ces lapins lui donne un sentiment de tranquilité et de paix. Puisque c’est exactement le genre de l’esprit que je tiens à exprimer à la fin de l’année, j’ai pensé qu’un lapin dans une tasse serait aussi bien qu’un flocon de neige pour ma carte!
