I’m tired of living in fear.

Je n’ai pas envie d’avoir peur tout le temps.

I mean it: if you’re offended by this painting, don’t tell me about it. Please tell them. They need to hear it from you, not me.

Je ne plaisante pas: si vous êtes offensé par ce tableau, ne m’en parlez pas. Allez leur dire. Ils ont besoin de l’entendre de votre part, pas du mien.

I share the feeling. It is also not an unprecedented image. A simple internet search yields many images where he carries a sword, the weapon of that time. Today’s crusades utilize modern weapons.

It just makes me cry; the power of this image and seeing the ritual of it unfolding is a testament to your courage and clarity.  The subversion of the person, history and message of Jesus is the crime of the century.  I studied US American Fundamentalism in seminary.  The whole belief system was such a confusing mystery to me.  All this started in about 1910 and has flamed up recently in ways that are terrifying.  Thank you!

Not offended - horrified maybe. I’m a white male Christian who just does not get how Christ’s message of humility and love has got so twisted. He told his disciples to put away their weapons, that they don’t fight flesh and blood, that they should love their enemies etc. This painting illustrates a fear and a type of cowardice or deep insecurity which is the complete opposite of love and trust and faith and rest. Perhaps this painting relates strongly to an American cultural reinterpretation of Christianity but it is not one I would identify with. But I’m not perfect by any means. A great and terrible painting !

@Margarita: True! And, as I understand it, no armed Jesus is a Jesus that tracks with what holy texts say about him!

@Cathy: Have you heard of the book Fantasyland? Did I already ask you about this? It’s a fascinating look at our special brand of American belief. You might like it…

@Paul: I don’t understand how anyone identifies with this painting, but many in the US do. I have no idea how to live in a world where they are in power (as they are today). Thanks for your feedback!

This is nothing new: the use of religion to colonize, subjugate, control, and pervert for the financial gain and benefit of white men.  I think the fact that more (good?) Christians are beginning to see it is a reflection of how this is finally beginning to impact them.  They can’t ignore it when it’s shooting up “their” kids, showing up in “their” white house, glorifying/perpetrating sexual assault on “their” women.  This is nothing new.  I wish it were.

Thanks for continuing to push back against these structures—even when it’s terrifying to do so.

I too am tired of living in fear. Knowing that religious beliefs have killed so many people through history and it is still doing so. The innocent are the first to suffer for the believe as we do or die.

@Kristina: Have you heard of SoulForce? I love the work they’re doing to push back against the way Christianity has been weaponized.

@Lynde: It’s the terrible truth that taints all religions. :(
