Or do they?

Ou est-ce vraiment le cas?

When I’m the target of the “you have it so easy” assumption, it usually has to with my career, because people can’t figure out how I managed to make it happen. This started years ago, with accusations—sometimes veiled but often direct—that I had to be selfish in order to be an artist.

When I make the assumption with other people, it almost always has to do with money. Like for many people, 99% of my problems could be solved with an extra $5000 now and again. When people who don’t have to worry about money complain about their problems—and especially when they gripe about not having enough cash—I have to work hard to remember that money can cause problems too.

My friend, who has a son with ADHD, told me recently that the traits of empathy and compassion are learned skills, not something a person is born knowing. You have to work at these things. I guess not everyone does that.

I often feel like we have a “grass is greener” mentality about a lot of stuff. Over the last year I have lost some weight. I can tell you that weighing less has not made me happier. And recently, a friend intimated to me that because my husband works and I stay at home, I have things easy.

Your VLOG makes me feel that we all struggle at times, regardless, and we would do well not to judge each other so much. As I said, compassion is a learned skill.

A timely post. Thank you!

Great post, Gwenn…

A friend of mine uses this a his signature on emails. I’ve always liked this quote.

“Be kind,  for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”  Plato….

Have a good day!

I’ve come across some people assuming my life is perfect and problem free too. “Just Ducky” seems like a great response :D

Some of my problems could be solved with an extra $5000 now and again as well but nowhere near 99%, more like 40% :D Some I have to live with the rest of my life and I accept that, but since they don’t show on the outside, some people don’t understand the impact they have on my life. I know you’re familiar with the unseen problems as well.

@Libby: I think it’s true that it’s a skill. I feel like I’ve grown my empathy muscles a lot in the last few years, and it’s only happened because I’ve worked at it. And that’s the crux of it: people have to want to work at it. There’s no way to inspire empathy itself, only inspire a desire to cultivate empathy…

@Lou: Plato said that? That makes me really happy for some inane reason. smile

@Linda: You just made me realize that I don’t care to solve some of my unseen problems. I don’t know that that is healthy or not, but that’s where I am. I accept that I have certain health problems, for example, and that they are incurable. Thanks for helping me to see that!

@Gwenn Not everything can be solved permanently. I accept that too. Feeling “as well as possible” is my goal. I don’t try to solve what can’t be solved but I don’t let it stop me. I find ways to do what I want anyway smile and I think you do too

I rarely envy folks I don’t know, but have found it easy to envy those I do—whether it’s wealth, access, or skill.  I don’t know when it happened but one day I realized that I have yet to know someone whose combination of good fortunate and bad luck is tempting enough to trade for my own.

On a related note: I don’t (at all) buy into the mythology that suffering is inherently good.  But I do know that I am a kinder, stronger, more resourceful person because of the challenges I have faced.  These traits were hard won and I won’t give them back now wink

@Kristina: YES! Agreed.
