Identifying with animals / S’identifier avec des animaux
Picking a favorite animal is about more than picking a favorite animal.
Choisir un animal préféré, c’est plus que choisir un animal préféré.
We tend to look to the animal world for role models for human behavior—in a new-age spiritual way, through traditional morality tales for children, and, most significantly, with science—but that we do it in a limited manner. For the most part, we look to animals and see only the gender binary and gender roles that we already consider right or moral instead of seeing the diversity that actually exists. I mean to remedy some of that with Crime Against Nature.

Nous avons tendance à regarder le monde animal pour trouver des modèles pour le comportement humain—à travers la spiritualité new age, via les contes traditionnels pour enfants, et, surtout, avec la science—mais nous le faisons d’une manière plutôt limitée. Nous regardons les animaux et nous voyons les mêmes idées simplistes des sexes et de leurs rôles que nous considérons déjà comme correctes ou morales au lieu de voir la diversité qui existe réellement. J’ai l’intention de remédier cela une peu avec Le crime contre la nature.

I went to a similar park here in Oregon last summer, and, though it didn’t foster a particular connection with the animals for me, it did give me a new appreciation of them. Being close enough to feed a giraffe means being close enough to understand how enormous and how enormously unwieldy and entirely graceful these creatures are!
My current favorite animal (and it changes just about every day) is the hyena. Something about how so many people loathe them makes them all the more worthy of love!

I love that you became a year of the monkey person while studying for your role, I think that’s why astrology and other birthday/year psychology works.
There is a funky new-age wild life park here, bottle feeding predators and feeding bananas to moose helps tourists come away sure they are wolves, bears, wolverines and moose with special connections to Alaskan nature. Hey, if it keeps them happy when they go back to the city, I guess it’s ok.
My favorite animal is usually something small with beady eyes like a chickadee or a robin.
