This is my presidential portrait.

Voici mon portrait présidentiel.

The last time I painted a politician’s portrait was in 2015, and I did to make sure that Portland’s mayor and his rich buddies couldn’t ever completely get away with the horrible things they did to my hometown. If you want to learn more about the difference between communication and self-expression as well as how all artists should be using these two modes, check out this video.

Trump as a Tiki torch

This painting is the result of years of watching Trump championing white supremacy, misogyny, and hatred generally, and it’s also obviously a direct response to the death and destruction in Charlottesville last weekend. But in a very real sense, this portrait comes from the French part of me, specifically the part that was piqued when I was interviewed about my art by Framablog recently and the French free culture blog asked if anything ever made me sad. I realized I don’t want to come across like some shiny happy robot, because not only is that not who I am but I also really dislike the shiny happy robot thing that happens to people through social media.

This artwork is being used in ways that gross me out. My reaction is here.

@Sarah: Thank you for commenting right away. With your encouragement, whatever may come (here or on *shudder* YouTube) feels totally do-able. <3

Gwenn,

That is a stunner! If I was there in person I would shake your hand and give you a big High Five! The Devil and The Terminator all rolled in to one. Wow! That is a really powerful portrait. You dug down deep for this one.
Great job!
Libby

@Libby: Virtual high five right back at you! smile It was good to get this out of me. I’d been avoiding portraying him because it felt like it was giving him more attention than he deserves. I finally realized that he has stolen my attention for years now and I needed to take it back. Thank you, as always, for cheering me on!

Thank you for the courage to speak truth to power through art, words, and video.  Prophesy is not speaking what will happen but what IS happening.  The parallel to Tiki torches is a brilliant context.  I am glad to be a supporter of your work.  I regret I missed the live stream. As a current supporter I got lost in how to register!  I could have emailed but got distracted then disappointed I missed it.  My daughter has done some art in this direction.  Thank you again and again.

Self-expression is important and sometimes you just have to let these things out

@Cathy: Thank you! Yes, this is the article I saw after I’d made my torch. I liked the Bob Staake torch a lot, but I admit that the article irked me. I was annoyed by how many more male illustrators were featured than female ones (at least judging by the names). :(
