Animal crackers / Des biscuits en forme d’animaux
Most biologists describe animals based on the way a species survives and procreates. They may also talk about an animal’s special adaptations or the way it contributes to its ecosystem, but for the most part scientists are limited in the way they talk about fauna. It’s all about statistics and averages: most aren’t interested in individual variation.
That’s why I can only learn so much about animals from books and why I took my research for Series X to the zoo.

Parfois ils discutent aussi les adaptations spéciales d’une espèce ou sa manière de contribuer à son écosystème, mais les scientifiques sont généralement limités dans la façon dont ils parlent de la faune. C’est toujours une question de statistiques et de moyennes: ils ne s’intéressent pas trop à la variation individuelle.
C’est pourquoi je ne peux pas tout apprendre sur les animaux à partir de livres et pourquoi je suis allée au zoo pour faire des recherches pour ma Série X.
A couple of weeks ago, I met with one of the senior keepers at the Oregon Zoo, and it was refreshing to talk specifics with him.
Au zoo, j’avais rendez-vous avec un des gardiens, et j’étais contente de parler des animaux individuels avec lui.
The keeper falls into a growing group of scientists: the ones who are interested in the variability of nature. More and more, biologists are giving up on the pretense of objectivity and studying animals more closely, even developing relationships with them. Jane Goodall is probably the most famous of this kind of scientist, but zoo keepers everywhere are doing similar work.
Le gardien se retrouve dans un groupe spécial de scientifiques: ceux qui s’intéressent à la variabilité dans la nature. De plus en plus, les biologistes renoncent à la prétention d’objectivité et étudient les animaux de plus près pour mieux comprendre la variabilité. Jane Goodall est probablement le plus célèbre de ce genre de scientifique, mais les gardiens de zoo partout font un travail similaire.
After meeting with the keeper, I set off to explore the zoo on my own, and it quickly became apparent that the most fascinating animals there weren’t the ones on exhibit.
Après avoir parlé avec le gardien, j’ai exploré le zoo toute seule, et il m’est vite venu à l’esprit que les animaux les plus fascinants n’étaient pas ceux qui étaient dans les cages.
A young boy asked his mother what these were and she responded: “Ugly pigs. Ugly, ugly pigs.”
Un jeune garçon a demandé à sa maman ce que ces animaux étaient. Elle a répondu: «Des cochons laids. Des cochons très très laids.»
At the elephant exhibit, there was a pachyderm pair off to one side. A mother suggested to her children that they were boyfriend and girlfriend. When her six year old asked which animal was the boy and which was the girl, the child’s older sister replied: “I hope the girl isn’t the bigger one because that would just be sad.”
Eleven years old, and she is already indoctrinating her younger brother into the subtle misogyny of appropriate sizes for the two sexes. Fascinating.
Chez les éléphants, il y avait une paire pachydermes à l’écart. Une mère a suggéré à ses enfants qu’ils étaient copain et copine. Lorsque son fils de six ans a demandé quel était le garçon et quelle était la fille, sa sœur aînée a répondu: «J’espère que la fille n’est pas la plus grande parce que ce serait triste.»
Onze ans, et elle essayait déjà d’endoctriner son jeune frère dans la misogynie subtile des tailles appropriées pour les deux sexes. C’était trop!
At the mandrill cage, it was something of an emergency when a male and a female started mating. All the parents covered their children’s eyes, commenting loudly to each other about how kids shouldn’t have to see that.
Meanwhile, the monkeys seemed unaware of the stir they’d caused. After the exchange the female withdrew to a further part of the exhibit, climbed a tree-thing, and turned to look back at the male. One of the mothers narrated for a friend: “she’s like ‘ya, back off!’”
Près de la cage des mandrills, ce fut la catastrophe quand un mâle et une femelle se sont accouplés. Tous les parents couvraient les yeux de leurs enfants, en disant les uns aux autres que les petits ne devraient pas voir ça.
De leur côté, les singes semblaient ignorer l’agitation qu’ils avaient inspirée. Après leur échange, la femelle s’était retirée dans une autre partie de l’exposition, elle était montée dans un arbre, et elle s’était retournée pour observer le mâle de loin. Une des mères a narré pour son amie: «Elle dit ‘ouais, fous-moi un peu la paix!’»
Throughout the exhibits, I definitely felt like the odd duck being there without a kid. Strollers were used like bulldozers through the crowds without anyone batting an eye, and parents glared at me if I stayed too long in a prime observation spot.
The message was clear: the zoo is for children and their adults.
Tout au long de mes explorations, je me suis sentie un peu bizarre d’être au zoo sans gamin. Là, les poussettes étaient utilisées comme des bulldozers dans la foule sans que personne ne se plaigne, et les parents me regardaient avec désapprobation si je restais trop longtemps dans les meilleurs endroits d’observation.
Le message était clair: le zoo est pour les enfants et leurs adultes.
And since that’s a message I’m fairly certain this hornbill would take issue with, I felt a kinship with the bird.
Persuadée que cette calao ne serait pas d’accord avec ce message, je me suis senti une affinité avec l’oiseau.
After a few hours of wandering, I was wiped out. When I overheard a dad offering his children animal crackers, I decided it was time to go!
Après quelques heures au zoo, j’étais complètement épuisée. Lorsque j’ai entendu un papa offrir à ses enfants des biscuits en forme d’animaux, j’ai décidé qu’il était temps de partir. Même si ces biscuits sont un goûter assez populaire aux USA, ils semblaient plutôt déplacés dans ce contexte!

This is interesting dilemma, isn’t it? I just visited the Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon. There, I was more comfortable with the animals’ habitats but there was something still a little sad about it. In the end though, I think your zoo’s mission is a good one and one that is necessary in our plugged in and utterly disconnected world.
J’adore votre visite du zoo, l’impression que j’en ai est qu’en visitant la faune du zoo vous ayez été confrontée à la faune qui visite le zoo.
Les humains sont une races de mamifères bien a part, se croyant bien supérieur, allant de leur interprétations et commentaires, jugeant les races qui leur sont “inférieure”. en effet il est facinant d’observé ces annimaux “supérieur” qui ne sont pas dans des cages! la bétise humaines atteint souvent des sommets bien malgré nous….
J’observe avec tendresse, bien sûr. Une tendresse qui vient du fait que je suis un de ces mammifères bizarres!

Anyway, à propos your suggestion that animals have personalities, I enjoyed reading Susan Casey’s comments about white sharks being individuals and having personalities, starting about page 130 in her book The devil’s teeth: A true story of obsession and survival among America’s great white sharks.

--- -- - --- - ---- - - --- ----- -- -For the past several years, I have been working on a series of portraits of animals from our local ‘zoo’ -the Sonoran Desert Museum. They have an art gallery and although I have been to many exhibits, I have only very rarely seen paintings of their actual animals.
The ASDM is one of the finest zoos in the world and features incredibly beautiful natural habitats. Despite this it is easy to see that many/most of the animals are very unhappy and bored and prefer to withdraw from people.
I struggle with the idea of keeping animals captive but also see the benefits. “The mission of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is to inspire people to live in harmony with the natural world by fostering love, appreciation, and understanding of the Sonoran Desert “ and they do this very well.
And yet…I can see that it hurts the spirit of these beautiful animals.
