Today, we did part one of the filming for the Oregon Art Beat segment about Apple Pie and my work in general. It was a lot more fun than I had anticipated--and not just because I was bracing myself for the worst either! KC and Tom and Bill made the shoot fun, and, though I never forgot they were there, they made it impossible for me to not get over my nerves about being on television.
First, they filmed at the Interstate Firehouse gallery.
Six of the subjects of Apple Pie were kind enough to put themselves in front of the camera. They did interviews about the process of having their portraits done, each of them standing in front of their paintings (like Zan, shown here with The Real Babe).
Christine, the subject of First American, chatted with my parents while she waited for her turn in front of the camera.
My father is collecting signatures from everyone involved in the show in his copy of Apple Pie, the book, so, when he heard that some of the subjects would be at the filming, he wanted to be there to meet them. I guess he was probably also happy to see his little girl being filmed for a television segment!
Luis and I in the “green room” (the dance studio at the Firehouse where we hung out while others were being filmed). Luis is the subject of This Looks Like A Job For A Chicano!
This is the first time Luis has seen the painting. Normally, I wouldn’t document the portrait-meeting moment--it’s sort of a private one, I think, and a bit delicate-feeling, even if the subject loves the painting. But since I’ve known Luis since we were fourteen, I figured I could get away with it!
I’m up next, and KC is listening raptly to some inane thing I’m saying and making me feel like a total rock star!
The moment before we had me take my shoes off because they made me too tall for the painting. Yes, that’s right, I was barefoot when they filmed me!
Then we came back to my studio and filmed me working!
The next step is to film me doing an interview for a portrait. Kevin Cook is actually going to let the OPB crew capture the whole experience--he’ll have two cameras recording his every movement. That’s not something I’d be comfortable with, but somehow I get the feeling that Kevin is just the kind of person who will LOVE that!
