Business and pleasure
On my recent trip to Vermont and Ohio, I didn’t manage to photograph much of New England. Fog and delayed flights made my stay in Vermont extra short and extra focused on the people I had been flown there to interview and photograph. In Ohio, I had a bit more time, so I indulged in one of my favorite activities…

The weather was glorious for my short stay, cool and crisp without being cold, bright and fall-y.
The company was also excellent, both in Ohio and in Vermont.
And that made it difficult to answer survey question that was asked of me as I checked in at the hotel in Ohio.
“Are you here for business or pleasure?”
As I see it, an artist’s life is all business and all pleasure.
Maybe it would be healthier for me to make more of a distinction in my life, but I always feel like I’m both working and playing. When I’m in my studio or nurturing my business in some way, I’m usually enjoying myself or at least enjoying the challenge. When I’m out of my studio and experiencing things that don’t directly relate to my work, all of that still gets folded back into my art in one way or another.
I like to think of my business-pleasure continuum less as a line and more as a circle. A whole.

Whenever I’m asked that question, I like to watch their eyes cloud over in confusion as I answer with a simple “Yes.”
