Can artists make money?

2016 . 07 . 06 - Comments / Commentaires (10)

This 25 minute talk explains how the art business isn’t like any other business.

When Cory Huff of The Abundant Artist invited me to speak at his conference, he gave me the assignment of summing things up. The theme he provided was: “What It All Looks Like.” I struggled for almost two months with how to bring it all together, but the effort was worthwhile. I’m grateful for the challenge as well as for what it helped me to make!

Actually I’m grateful for a lot of things when it comes to Cory. His new book, How to Sell Your Art Online, features my career as an example!

This photo represents a few of my favorite parts of the conference. I got to reconnect with the brilliant and lovely Vicki Amorose, whose ear I am about to lick and whose excellent book, Art-Write, should be in every artist’s library. Also, I got to meet the fascinating and funny Melody Blore, who’s pictured at right, as well as the wonderful and witty Eileen Goldenberg, who took the photo.

Some of the images from the talk are available in my print shop, here, here, and here. I’ve done a conference every year for the last four years, which is something that makes me very happy! Last year, it was a talk about freeing oneself from copyright. In 2014, it was a TEDx talk in Switzerland, and in 2013 it was a short form talk at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Thank you for your clear, true, provocative and prophetic reflections.  I hope it will be posted across several platforms so that I can share it widely. You are my audience and I am yours.  You are a great gift to the world! Your fan, Cathy

@Cathy: You are so kind! And yes, you are definitely a part of my audience and I’m honored to be a part of yours. My Internet connection isn’t good enough for uploading to YouTube at my parents’ house, but I’ll upload it there next week when I’m home. smile

As usual, you have made me think about things in ways I might not have considered - my brain is tired, but happy. Thanks!

So glad you got to meet the amazing Vicki Krohn - but what about me??? Yo! Dude! Chopped liver? Seriously, I loved the mash up we had at Portland Art Museum (exit through the gift shop, thank you!) I’m inspired by your frank speak on the biz of being an artist. Hope to see you on the left coast again soon! Hugs and harmony! Dee

@Denise: You are the yummiest chopped liver EVER—and I’m a vegetarian! Seriously, now that I have your email address, I have some sweet photos of you and Vee that I need to send you. You were definitely a highlight of the day and it was remiss of me to not say so in the post. smile

Hi Gwenn,

when you have a literal couple of minutes free, take a look at this video trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouoodQg3XD0 - this is the intro to a longer BBC documentary that ironically is hidden behind copyright restrictions smile

In essence, the message here is that we as living beings are energetic processes as much as physical objects and it struck me watching your 25 minute video above that Art is a prime example of process not product

ie it is the energy transfer between Artist and Patron/Matron that matters not the medium itself and it is this that makes Art so different from other products.

All the best,

Guy

@Guy: I love the way your brain works! Yes. Yes definitely, art is energy and process more than a physical thing.
