Drawing as meditation / Dessiner, méditer

2013 . 03 . 18 - Comments / Commentaires (4)

I’ve never been much for meditation.  In fact, it’s when I try to tell my brain to be quiet that the real noise begins.  That said, I do know how to find peace regularly.

Je ne médite pas.  En fait, c’est quand j’essaie de calmer mon esprit que le bruit commence sérieusement.  Ceci dit, je sais comment trouver une certaine tranquilité régulièrement.

I get to it by drawing.

J’y arrive en dessinant.

I may find a similar sense of presence as I’m painting, but, because it takes me months to finish that sort of work, the meditative quality isn’t quite so smooth or complete.

Je peux retrouver ce calme quand je fais de la peinture, mais, parce qu’il me prend plusieurs mois pour achever un tableau, la méditation est interrompue.  Elle n’est pas aussi complète.

I can make a drawing like this one in ten or twenty minutes.

Je peux créer un dessin comme celui-ci en dix ou vingt minutes.

And by the time it’s done, the noise is gone.

Et, entre temps, le bruit disparaît.

I love your art and found this post most facinating. I am unable to shut off the chatter in my head and meditate also, but now I realize that’s what happens when I get lost in an art project. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thank you Lois!  Sometimes I think the reason why I make art is to have some time when I’m fully in the flow so that I might know what I’m looking for in the rest of my life! wink

Thank you SO much for posting this!  I find drawing incredibly meditative, and have found myself getting lost for hours while drawing, only realizing the time that has passed when the sun has come up.

I love that you have shown how your sketches progress. Just a tiny insight into your creative process. I learn something from you every time I read your blog. Our styles and mediums are so different, but your work opens my eyes to so many possibilities, and always leaves me inspired. Thank you for so generously sharing your gift with the world.
Shannon

Your comment makes me so happy, Shannon! I’m glad that what I share is interesting to artists in many media, and I find myself doing the same thing when I look for community. I connect more with another artist’s outlook thank with their medium…
