Feeding giraffes / Donner à manger aux girafes
As part of my birthday road trip in June, David took me to the Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon.
En juin après avoir visité la Forêt des Pins Bristlecone, David m’a emmenée au Wildlife Safari à Winston, en Oregon.
There, we met up with Katie, the sister of my childhood friend Kristina and one of the elephant keepers.
Là, nous avons rencontré Katie, la sœur de mon amie d’enfance Kristina et une des gardiennes des éléphants.
As when I went to the Oregon Zoo to meet with one of the keepers, it was nice to know someone on the inside at the Safari so that I could learn about the individuality of animals.
Comme quand je suis allée au zoo à Portland pour rencontrer un des gardiens, j’étais contente de connaître quelqu’un qui pouvait m’aider à apprendre davantage sur l’individualité des animaux.

And unlike when I visited Portland’s park…
Mais quand j’étais au zoo, je ne pouvais pas voir les animaux sans l’intermédiaire des barrières et des panneaux de verre.

...it was fun to see many of the animals without the intermediary of fences and glass panes.
Au parc à Winston, je voyais la plupart des animaux de plus près.
I was especially struck by the many varieties of herbivores at the Safari…
J’ai été particulièrement frappée par les nombreuses variétés d’herbivores au Safari…
...and the zebras were my favorite.
...et les zèbres faisaient partie de mes préférés.
I know that children find them fascinating for their distinctive coloring, but I’d forgotten that fascination somewhere along the way. Seeing these animals in person rekindled it.
Je sais que les enfants les trouvent fascinants pour leur coloration distinctive, mais j’avais oublié cette fascination en devenant un adulte. En voyant ces animaux en personne, je l’ai retrouvée.
Discovering squirrels among the exotic fauna was fun, and the fluffy-tailed rodents were certainly taking advantage of the abundant feed available at the park.
Découvrir les écureuils parmi la faune exotique était super. Ces rongeurs avaient compris comment profiter de la nourriture abondante disponible sur le parc.
One of the highlights of the Safari was feeding the giraffes.
Donner à manger aux giraffes fut l’un des meilleurs moments de la visite.

There was something entirely unreal…
Il y avait quelque chose de totalement irréel dans cette expérience.
...about being so close to these giants.
C’était incroyable d’être si près de ces géants.
We also fed the bears.
Nous avons aussi donné à manger aux ours.

I know I wouldn’t appreciate having day-old doughnuts thrown at my face…
Je sais que je n’aurais pas apprécié qu’on me jette des beignets à la figure…
...but these guys were definitely not complaining!
...mais ces gros nounours ne se plaignaient pas!
All in all, the visit was a very educational one.
Dans l’ensemble, la visite a été très informative.

Among other things, I learned that I want to be a flamingo—for the color, the long bendy neck, and the amazing balance (sleeping while standing on one foot!)—but I wouldn’t mind an elephant’s trunk and possibly some zebra stripes too.
Entre autres choses, j’ai appris que je veux être un flamant rose—pour la couleur, le cou sinueux, et l’équilibre étonnant (pouvoir dormir debout sur un pied!)—mais ça ne me dérangerait pas non plus d’avoir une trompe d’éléphant et, éventuellement, quelques rayures de zèbre aussi.

Look at all of those lines and textures and shapes - oh my! They could keep you painting for a long time. Enjoyed the photos, especially the close-up of the giraffe and the bear with folded paws.
