There are many advantages to painting portraits from photographs:
1) Using photography helps me to capture a subject’s breath and movement when I paint.
2) To work from photos I need to meet the subject, but only just once. A person doesn’t have to sit for me for hours on end repeatedly.
3) Pictures make it possible for me to be flown across the country to spend a day with subjects and, a year later, deliver finished paintings.
I haven’t had the chance to explore this third benefit until just a few days ago when some clients flew me to Vermont and Ohio.

It was fun seeing new parts of the US while also meeting new people. And I admit that being flown around for work made me feel a little like a rock star…

...and even a rock star who deserves to treat herself to a vacation in a tropical paradise. So tomorrow I leave for Hawaii. I’ve never been, and I mean to enjoy discovering this corner of the States too!
