The subject makes the portrait. / Le sujet fait le portrait.
No matter how well made a portrait is, it can only ever be as lovely as its subject. If you know the subject of a painting, it is inevitably more interesting.
Même si un portrait est bien fait, il ne peut pas être plus beau que son sujet. Si vous connaissez le sujet d’un tableau, ce tableau est obligatoirement plus intéressant.
And if you don’t know Françoise, you’re missing out anyway…not just because of this portrait!
