This is the talk I did at the beginning of May at the Université de Québec à Montréal for the Adte. You may recognize the first of the six steps since it’s taken from my TEDx talk. The whole process of freeing your art is described in greater detail in my book You Share Good.
In the talk, I refer to a number of artists, but I want to give the linky kind of love to Ella Jaroszewicz who provided one of the ways to tell if you’ve copied badly and Nina Paley who explains watermarks so well, along with Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and Miriam Elia. Also, if you want to learn more about Creative Commons licenses, you can’t do better than this short video.
This talk has been evolving since 2015, when I gave a first version of it at the Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre. I’m pleased to report that I’ve even done the talk in English now, at Stockton University in New Jersey, where the administration almost banned my visit on the grounds that the topic was too radical!
(The only reason that deserves an exclamation point is because the professor who had originally invited me is a brave and thoughtful person who argued passionately for the concept of a university as a place where ideas must flow freely and who made sure the talk happened.)
