Face Making

Artist Gwenn Seemel’s bilingual blog about all the faces she makes while painting faces and other things.

I worry sometimes that my blog gives the impression that I set out to do a thing and then I do it, layer by layer, straight through, no matter the challenges.  While it make look that way in retrospect, when I’m in it, my process feels a lot more jumbled and organic than that.

For more about the unpredictable and messy nature of my process, check out this vlog or this one.

Gwenn,

If it’s any consolation, I think that watching the process shots shows that you are thinking while you are painting. And I thought that it was fairly obvious that you started with a loose plan. That was how I interpreted the videos anyway. I am always amazed that more people, artists especially, don’t associate art making with the art of writing. It’s so similar to me that it’s hard to get away from that idea. Rough ideas, multiple drafts, planning, working on the fly-it sounds like art to me:)I work in gouache for a rough beginning and even that gets tweaked.

Hope you are well. Another good set of vlogs. Always appreciated.
Libby

@Joe: I’m glad!  Thank you for cheering me on. smile

@Libby: My process for painting is definitely like my process for writing!  I’m always amazed to hear from artists who work in a more structured manner.  They must have different connections set up in their brains…!
