On networking

Getting ahead in the world isn’t just about who you know.  It’s also about who knows you and how long they’ve known you.

The series about television’s power in our lives that I refer to in the video is this one, and the exhibition at Western Oregon University that I mention features the work of Jessica Burke along with much of my Apple Pie series.  Image, Identity, Allegory runs through March 23, and it’s open Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM as well as by appointment.

I think a huge part of networking is reciprocation. Particularly with online networking but also in the real world it pays to promote friends and acquaintances and to be supportive of their efforts. It’s a great exchange.

I could see that, but I think it’s a little dangerous to give in order to receive.  I’ve known people who keep a detailed tally of every little favor they do, and their method doesn’t earn them favors returned or many friends!

Hmmm…not what I meant. I do it in all sincerity and I don’t keep a tally of whether it comes back to me or not. I like promoting other folks who I think are super talented. I really enjoyed curating art for several years and may go back to it some time.
