The pleasure of panel / La beauté du bois

2012 . 03 . 26 - Comments / Commentaires (4)

When I decided to use panel as my support for Crime Against Nature, I had no idea just how much I would learn from it.

Quand j’ai décidé de peindre sur du bois pour ma séries Le crime contre la nature, je ne savais pas combien cela m’allait apprendre.

In all species of seahorse, including the pot-bellied seahorse, the female inserts a tube into a hole in the abdomen of the male, depositing her eggs in his pouch. The male incubates the eggs inside his body and gives birth to live baby seahorses.

To learn more about what Crime Against Nature is as a series, watch this video.

Nice video.  I like panels too.  Looks like yours also hang easily?  Could you share what panels you use, how thick…and perhaps they are pre-gessoed, or at least the ones behind you on video appear to be.  Or maybe you pregessoed them.  No warping?  Thanks.  Great art…love the whimsy and texture you achieve.  Lovely.

I’m using Fiberboard Wood Art Panels by Art Alternatives.  They’re half an inch thick and they have these great inset hanging holes, pre-drilled.  I gesso them myself (I like a textured gesso) and there’s no warping that I’ve noted.

Also, thank you for all your nice words!

I paint only on panels. I like the hard surface. These animal pieces are little gems Gwenn. Really liking what you are doing right now.

Thanks Cathie!  I’m also really enjoying the effects I can achieve moving paint around with my fingers on the panel.  There’s a flexibility to the hard surface that I feel like I’m only beginning to discover!
