The portraitist portrayed…
Improv theater can’t happen without an inspirational spark, and that usually comes in the form of a word or phrase from the audience. In a new take on an old practice, the Portland improv group Super Project Lab collaborates with both the audience and with special guests from the Portland community. The audience asks the guests questions; the guests share unrehearsed anecdotes from their lives; the improv group remixes these truths along with their truths to create compelling fiction.

Last night, I was one of the lucky guests who served as inspirational fodder for the Lab’s hilarity. And it was SO MUCH FUN! As I watched the cast members work with the stories I gave them, it occured to me that what they do is a whole lot like what I do. They didn’t act out what I had described, just as I don’t simply reproduce a face. The Lab picked through what I said, riffed on it and added layers to create their own funny worlds. And that’s what I do…only without the bright lights and the laughing audience!
This year’s run of Meet Your _________! is on through the end of November, with their roster of guests including one of my very favorite faces in town, the author Marc Acito.
