Too often, we make artists into the “other” and that’s bad for everyone.

I’m glad you tackled this head on!  As citizens, I believe we all have a responsibility to act mindfully.  I appreciate why it’s tempting for some people to hold artists to a different standard.  Unfortunately, in doing so they fail to acknowledge (as you noted) the realities and complexities of the world we live in, which is both unfair and counterproductive.

I think it’s easy to do this, to separate out certain groups.  I do it with religious leaders and guru-types: I expect them to live to another standard.  And I feel like it’s slightly more appropriate with those people than it is with artists.  After all, they are preaching about living a certain way so why shouldn’t they live it?  Also, they’re my expectations so obviously I think they’re more appropriate. wink

Really well stated. Congratulations on your sale. It’s hard enough to make money as an artist, let alone to hold your purchasers above reproach, and only take money from them if they’re squeaky clean, absolutely ideal buyer candidates. Thanks for sharing.
