Subjectively Corvallis
Yesterday, Subjective opened at the Arts Center in Corvallis, Oregon. I drove down from Portland with an old friend and fellow Willamette University graduate, Dave. And, because it was on the way and we knew the cherry trees would be in bloom, we stopped off at our Alma mater.

April Waters’ Amy Goodman 2008
While we were there, we were sure to visit April Waters’s show of portraits up at the Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center. For Sheros, Waters depicts six important female social and environmental activists, but that description doesn’t begin to cover the experience of the paintings in person.

They are large, upwards of seven by five feet by my estimation. Their size coupled with Waters’ fine use of color and texture made me feel like I was being consumed by the paintings…in a very good way! These portraits make an excellent case for bigger being better.
Dave and I also stopped off at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art where we both used to work (I was an intern while I was in school and Dave was doing research there at the time). We ran into the director and he gave me some sweet news: my work is now part of the permanent collection of the Hallie Ford. It seems that a patron donated one of my works to the museum!

By the time we made it to the Corvallis Arts Center, Dave and I had already had quite a day.

It was exciting to officially launch Subjective’s book…

...and especially in such a beautiful venue! Subjective the book includes images of all the works in the series and a special introductory essay by Dr. Richard Brilliant. It’s available for $20 through the Arts Center or through me. Email me if you’d like to purchase a copy.

Two of the subjects, Becca’s parents, came to the opening and were kind enough to be available for questions about their participation in the show. My parents and partner will be backing us up at the artist talk on Thursday 11 March. Lucky lucky are we to have such lovely families!
