I was jumping up and down!  You did this so brilliantly.  The flow was excellent.  The images added to and didn’t distract from your words.  Warm, charming, dynamic.  Bravo!!!!

Really great speech. I had a very different view of copyright and sharing until I started following you and your artwork. It just feels that much more freeing to take that label off the things I do.

Gwenn,

I loved what you said in this TEDx talk. It made me think about all my old home music recordings from my teens and early twenties and how I naturally would just incorporate elements of other people’s work via music, movie, and TV samples, always forging something new, never with ill intention, it was just an extension of my own creativity, another tool that felt completely legit and right to me. What you articulated so well in this video is how I’ve always felt about copyright and it felt good to hear someone else explain it. Plus, it was funny/cool to see my wife make an appearance. That really caught me off guard. (She is watching it right now.)

Thanks,
Todd

Gwenn:

First, great talk!  Well organized, well presented and best of all . . . made me think of some things that hadn’t occurred to me before.  I see amazing things in your future . . . and I get to say I know you and have some of your portraits!

Second, your talk made me think of a couple of the advertising classes I took in journalism school.  Everyone thinks successful advertising is all pure creativity, but we were taught that it’s “90 % perspiration and just 10 %  inspiration.”  The “perspiration” part came in the form of pouring over what other people had done, looking at other ideas, researching concepts both visual and other all to come up with our own ideas.  What is often thought of as “inspiration” is really just the reworking of earlier ideas in a new creative fashion and for a new purpose.

Finally, I love any discussion of how art is primarily communication.  After listening to your talk, one might say a work of art is just one sentence in an ongoing conversation, and how can you copyright a conversation?

Thanks for all the work you put into creating this conversation.
Nancy

Thank you, Gretha and Nancy! You are both so kind. And, Nancy, I love what you say about a work of art being a sentence in a conversation. It’s pure poetry as well as being a really good way to make a free culture argument!

Thank you, I have been stuck for years trying to reinvent the wheel or be “original” ...I just need to make my art and STOP worrying or thinking so hard I am frozen….Thank you for setting me free…
