On strange weather and even light
Oregonians are notorious for saying that the weather in a given year is strange, that they’ve never seen anything quite like it. And every year it’s the same story: meteorologically speaking, the Pacific Northwest is always unusual. This leaves no normal to compare to, but logic doesn’t seem to enter into these discussions. Weather here is always being weird.
This particular kind of reflection about the weather says a lot more about us than it does about the cloud cover or lack thereof. I like to think it reveals just how sensitive Oregonians are to the tiniest changes in the weather around here. It’s not us being eccentric: it’s us being aware.

All that said, I’m writing because this summer in Oregon has been strange, but I mean stranger than your average strangeness. June was more rainy than usual, and it was mostly cool and wet through July and the beginning of August.
While many people in the Pacific Northwest missed the warmth and the break from the rain that they’re used to getting in the summer, I thoroughly enjoyed the weird while it lasted. For me, it’s about staying cool, but also about the quality of light that only comes with lots of clouds. Because that’s really why I love living here: sunlight filtered through a cloudy sky might just be the most perfect light ever.

Rob Robinson...
Yes, a wonderfully strange summer with that delicious coolness!

Great painting light and weather.
