Why artists need so much validation / Pourquoi les artistes ont besoin de tant de reconnaissance

And why we often don’t get as much as we need.

Et pourquoi souvent nous ne recevons pas autant que nous avons besoin.

This video is related to this one about how everyone craves credit and to this one about the myth of the selfish artist. I talk about validation in my book about art marketing, which you can read here for free.

There is some real truth here! It’s all I ever read about-that the artist is supposed to be self sufficient. They don’t need outside validation to know about themselves as an artist and that their art is good/bad, etc. And I have asked myself lots of times if my art could exist (and me too) without the input of social media comments. I think you need both: a very strong self esteem (with regard to your art so you can act independently to make the art you want) and the input of others-so you can know how you fit in to your community, as you suggested.

How do we get sucked into these myths anyway?
A great post! Thank you!

@Libby: Yes! And a good sense of self and your worth actually allows you to listen to your community better, I think!

I love baby Gween and rainbow boots.
I also love and reaaaaally appreciate this post. Especially as I am seeking that validation of my artistic voice when society just passively dismisses it as a hobby. No, sir. It’s my inner being manifested in physical form. But it would be cool if the world around me knew how to appreciate that. However, American society is not taught to value art, only see it as this intangible, disconnected practice of the past. It’s pretty but it doesn’t hold value. Well nay sir, I say! Art breathes life into literally everything around you. An artist’s hand touch most things around us. Art IS life! So, yeah we need validation - but that’s because we need others to see that art is REAL and alive and part of everyone’s existence.

I really just posted to talk about your baby rainbow boots ❤❤❤

@Char: The world I’m working towards has rainbow boots in every size, enough for everyone! And it has art being loved and valued the way it deserves to be! I’m pretty sure those things are connected. smile
