Chuck and I met in Paris when we were both studying abroad.  While he continued working on his Japanese in class and learning French primarily by going to films, I was attending a mime and dance school run by Ella Jaroszewicz and speaking only a kind of half-French.  Just two or three students at the school were French.  The rest of us, including Ella, were communicating with our second language and making up a third as we went along!
