I met Lindsay wedged behind a staircase in an old warehouse in Portland. We were playing in Sojourn Theatre’s Seven Great Loves, a devised theater piece for which the audience followed the action through the rooms of a one-time factory. Twice every weekend night for a month we would perform our staircase dance for crowds which, on one occasion, included my eighty-some year old grandmother.

After that particular show, the director came into the dressing room and asked if we’d all noticed the charming little old lady who had watched our performances so earnestly with her blue-blue eyes. I had to explain that, if she seemed so intent, it was because she couldn’t understand a word we were saying. She only spoke French.
