In 2005, I embraced the landscape orientation of a composition. I began to enjoy the background breathing space that the horizontal allowed.
I created a whole series in this manner and it was a participant in that series who commented about a result of this shift in my work. Steve said that my works were remarkably abstract for being so representational. He was referring to my compositions as well as my use of color and texture. He saw that, at my core, I love the look of paint on canvas. If I manipulate the paint to look like a portrait, it’s in part because I don’t know how to make a composition without a face in it.
