The title of Justin’s portrait, Underneath The Lines, comes from our photo-session.  During it, Justin asked me what went on underneath all the lines in my portraits—was it a photo realistic portrait?  And did I layer the lines over it as added decoration?  The answers to those questions are no and no.  Throughout the painting process, the lines and marks vary in size and orientation, color and translucency, but they are there from the first.  It is how I make a mark, and it’s the only way I know how to.

To see something of the process that I describe, visit the many articles on my blog which feature images of works as they develop.
