For Public Faces, as with most of my conceptual series, I choose my subjects without too much planning, usually following one lead to another.  For example, I found the paramedic for the sister series Private Masks because my then-boyfriend had worked with him.  And it was the paramedic who then pointed me in the direction of the young veteran for the series.  In the case of Angela, above, I contacted the Portland police spokesperson who also gave me the name of a detective.
