self-portrait by Portland artist Gwenn Seemel

Gwenn Seemel
acrylic on panel
7 x 5 inches

I paint a lot of self-portraits and, early on in my career, I worried that my obsessive self-portraying was vanity. I even took a two year break from it just to be sure that I could. These days, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that my self-portraits make me a better human being, but I do know that they don’t make me anymore egotistical than the next person. Portraiture can be an indicator of self-love, but not all self-love is a bad thing.
