Lola’s portrait was a surprise gift from her son-in-law, but Lola wasn’t the recipient. Her daughter was. Similarly, I made this painting of my partner’s grandfather for him as a surprise birthday gift, something I’d done with three portraits of him in 2005.
Since I paint only from photos I take myself, my portraits can never come completely out of the blue to their subjects, but the finished works never fail to astonish their subjects on some level.
