In 2009, I started painting miniatures, but they didn’t get any smaller than this one. This portrait of my grandmother is just four by four inches, and it’s the smallest stand-alone portrait I’ve ever painted. Though the face part of this painting is smaller still, the overall composition is twelve times as big.
This painting is named for the only word of English my French grandmother ever spoke. It was how she said “butterfly.”
