I love how Becca’s portrait of my brother shows him in an animated talking moment, much like her portrait of my mother. It’s very much who he is. My portrait of him, on the other hand, is about the way that fire can travel through smoke and the way that emotions keep returning until they’re faced. In other words, my portrait of Kristan is more about our relationship than about Kristan himself. And that was the whole point of Subjective: to show how the artist’s relationship with the subject or lack thereof affects the portrait that’s painted.
