Gwenn Seemel
Mothership (Fanfin seadevil)
2012
acrylic on panel
10 x 10 inches

Making this painting, I used a lot of the same compositional techniques that I developed through this work since they both use strong lines to slice up the space. To learn more about the making of Mothership, watch this vlog. Below is the text from the book Crime Against Nature that goes with this image—the book can be read and purchased here.

In fact, girls can dwarf boys.

As with most kinds of anglerfish, when a male fanfin seadevil finds a mate, he latches onto her with his teeth. Over time, his half inch body merges with her eight inch body, and their circulatory systems fuse. When the female is ready to spawn, she has sperm readily available.
