For the most part, my art tends to be pretty realistic. Yes, my style isn’t straight realism, and, no, I’m not playing down the role of my imagination: I’m just telling it like it is. I paint portraits and a lot of other real world things. But sometimes, like with this parrot-headed cat and cat-headed parrot, I go elsewhere with my art. It happened a number of times in 2013, especially with this horse and with this representation of a client’s recurring dream. That more adventurous and surrealistic part of my work really first took hold with this series from 2007.

Carrot and pat is part of a series of painted drawings that I created to illustrate my book about why I don’t copyright my work. For more about the making of this piece, watch this vlog.
