Apple Pie |

A scrumptious dessert. The descriptor of all things American. And a new series of provocative paintings. |

Apple Pie challenges its viewers on many levels. It's the hip manifestation of an old-school genre as well as an activist inquiry that leaves those leaning both left and right questioning their understanding of the United States. It's a series of images that starts a conversation. Meet a Washington look-alike who has more of a right to the title "First American" than George ever did and a Lady Liberty who remembers her French origins and refuses to carry a torch. The riveting isn't being done by just Rosie anymore. If we really mean to do it, we need to start by re-evaluating what it means to be an American. |

The ONLY definition of art: There are as many proposed definitions for art as there are artists and art-lovers in the world, but I can’t help but feel that they all refer to the one core meaning. To my mind, art is always about causing change--big or small, personal or global. That’s its value, its reason, its purpose, and its complete definition. Of course, not everyone agrees with me. Here are some other definitions of art and why I think they all point back to revolution. 1. Art is a profound human exercise or experience. 2. Art is a reflection of what it is to be a human. 3. Art is about appreciating what is already there but has somehow been overlooked in our everyday busy-ness. 4. Art is an attempt to manifest or make material the profundity of simple human gestures, like crossing one's legs or frowning in concentration. 5. Art is meant to provide recreation or therapy for the artist. 6. Art allows the artist to enjoy the satisfaction of creating something. 7. Art is for relaxation. 8. Art is for spreading information. 9. Art is meant to educate. 10. Art helps to convey the artist’s feelings to others. 11. Art is meant to delight or to amuse. 12. Art should be sexy or make the artist sexy. 13. Art makes special. 14. Art will NEVER be about causing change. The “artist as social critic” concept failed in 1937, when Picasso painted Guernica. Neither Guernica nor a million Guernica-like paintings have ever even slowed down a war for a second, let alone stopped one. 15. Art is SUBJECTIVE. Please calm down. What's your preferred way of talking about revolution? |

For years, fashion houses have dictated what bags we carry. We have put ourselves on wait lists and paid through the nose in order to accessorize in precisely the same way as everyone else. And with the start of every new season, we did it all over again until the It Bag had taken hold of our very purse-onalities! Swap out the It for a You and give the bag a facelift.
