This image started as an exploration of pictures of flamingos, an animal I knew I’d probably want to paint for Everything’s Fine just because I love how expressive their long necks are. When I came across the photo of the flamingo resting its head on its own back, it made me think of an old-timey image of a woman fainting and putting the back of her hand on her forehead. From there, it only made sense to rustle up some plastic lawn birds to illustrate the weirdo’s plight.

The pink of these flamingos echoes the color of this mammoth and this rose in a pleasing way, though the through-color for this series is actually grey, which you can see in the background of The Five Stages of Not Fitting In as well as in touches and swathes throughout all the other pieces, except this one for obvious reasons.

You can watch the making of The Five Stages of Not Fitting In.
