She’d just described me as “tie-dye rainbow” to another customer, someone I was meeting for the first time in person at Union Coffee, which is Carolyn’s shop, and I arrived in a black dress. I won’t say I asked Carolyn to be a part of this series out of guilt for not living up to my own hype on that day. It may have played a tiny part in the decision, but, mostly, I was just pleased to have my tie-dye rainbows noticed. That, and Carolyn allowed me to take over the front of her shop when the Belgian documentary film crew who’d come interview me was looking for some local color as a backdrop.
