To paint portraits, I work from photos I take myself of my subjects, and many of my nonhuman subjects aren’t thrilled by my process. My DSLR camera is a surprisingly loud object, full of creaks and beeps that scare off the more sensitive, including Uzumaki who initially stayed far away from me. Of course with his siblings, Sage and Fuma, taking it all in stride, he eventually warmed up. Similarly, Leslie and Smokey helped each other be brave around me.
