With this video, I am officially announcing my next project: Empathetic Magic the book! It will be based, in part, on the series, but it’ll also explore how to paint portraits and how that pursuit makes you a better human being. It will be a guide for carefully observing other people and appreciating their complexity, and it’ll include how-to exercises for readers at any level of artistic skill wanting to practice empathetic magic in their own lives.

I’ve been meaning to make space in my studio and in my brain for this project for a long time, but there were always other concerns—usually of the financial variety. With COVID-19 and the heaps of uncertainty it engenders, I have stopped listening to my own excuses.

I used to say that I’ve sold my soul to portraiture. I plastered the phrase all over my social media profiles, even though I knew that it bothered some people, because it is the truest expression of how I feel about this special genre. It’s time to make Empathetic Magic the book happen.

The three portraits in this video are part of the book project described in this post—a project which, like too many important things, has been delayed.
