In 2004, I made this heroic self-portrait in order to help me imagine a new way of being. I liked the idea of doing a similar portrait twenty years later, though on a very different scale. The 2024 painting is just a fraction of the size of the 2004 one—in part because I found an appreciation for working smaller as I got older and in part because, after so many years as a full-time artist, I have far less space to store large artworks.
