Blog / 2019 / When You Are Already Bright

August 26, 2019

I met and photographed the Eastern newts featured in this video when I was at the Stomping Ground artist residency at the beginning of the month. These colorful creatures were everywhere at the camp—a delight for my eyeballs in that I love bright colors, but also a challenge for the artist in me.

You see, I tend to turn up the saturation in my art, but, when real life is so vibrant, it doesn’t make sense to bump up the color. In this way, bright creatures force me to slow my process down and focus more on design. That’s where the joy of mirroring and doubling the image (as shown at the end of the video) comes in!

There are prints and t-shirts of Newt in my Redbubble shop, and all these items take advantage of beauty of this image in repeated form. The original painting is also available for $100 plus shipping—see all currently available artworks.
