For more about my Winifriend, go to wwsculpture.com. I painted her portrait in 2022 soon after we met.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Sometimes you need to go away in order to be able to be truly at home. Not in the sense that you find a new home somewhere else, but in the sense that, when you return home from your trip, you appreciate where you live in a new way.

It’s true of travel, and it’s true in an art practice as well, as these little ceramic pieces can attest.

My friend Winifred—or, as I like to call her, my Winifriend!—is an extraordinary ceramicist, working with figures and colors in ways that feel at once very familiar and entirely other to me. I love her art and I love visiting her in her studio, and she regularly invites me to do some work in her space too. That’s how this head and squirrel came to be.

I’ve done ceramics now and again over the years, but I’ve always struggled with painting the 3D object. Winifriend uses true color glazes—glazes that are pretty much the same color before and after you fire the piece—and that changed everything for me.

I love art travels! And Winifriends too!

Maybe this post made you think of something you want to share with me? Or perhaps you have a question about my art? I’d love to hear from you!
