I made this painting soon after discovering the paintings of Arnold Mesches, and his influence is obvious if you know his work well enough. In some of his portraits, this American painter uses a similar kind of loose kind of crosshatching. I love the way that art inspires art, and I’m never shy about citing my sources, either when they are obvious or when they’re less so.
