Pearl’s grandson commissioned this portrait of her and, when he did, she was living at a retirement home where I volunteered in high school. In fact, that place was hugely formative to me as an artist. It was there that I learned to draw people.

It was also there that I met David who became a subject for my 2005 series Private Masks and later commissioned me to do his wife’s portrait.
