In the video about the making of this double portrait, I talk about how I sit down at my easel every day as if I am starting over with a painting, but mostly I mean it sort of poetically—more as a state of mind than an action. Sometimes though, I literally start over. With Philadelphia Fleabane, I sanded down the piece quite a bit one point in the process and started not from scratch, but from a mess. You can see it in this video.
